| Also it is a perfect place for tourists and
sightseers to discover the unspoilt rugged beauty and expansive open
countryside on the southern fringe of the Wicklow Mountains National Park.
This region is steeped in heritage going back as far as 500a.d. with the
monastic settlement that St Kevin founded in Glendalough, to the Military Road
of eighteen hundreds with its associated barracks in Glenmalure and
Aughavannagh, a testament to the resistance of the United Irishmen and the 1798
rebellion.
Iron Bridge / Wicklow Way
The Wicklow Way crosses the Ow valley at the Iron Bridge (1.5km
from Lugnaquilla House Hostel). This is the forth stage stop on the Wicklow Way
and is a famous landmark for walkers.
Aughavannagh
Aughavannagh is famous for the Military Barracks that was built
circa 1800 by the British in order to subdue the rebels and Michael Dwyer. It
is one of five barracks that they build on the Military Road that cuts through
Aughavannagh. Subsequently the building was bought by the family of Charles
Stewart Parnell and used as a hunting lodge. It later became an An Oige hostel
and ran as such for approx 40 years. Sadly it closed in 1998.
